Vaughan crime statistics from 2008
The town of Vaughan, Ontario, lies north of Toronto and is considered part of the GTA census. With its population of 238,866, it is the 2nd largest town in York Region, sitting just behind Markham’s population of 281,571. It is one of the fastest growing communities in Canada, having doubled its population since 1991.

For this report, we gathered crime statistics on Vaughan in combination with all the communities policed by York Regional, including towns such as Markham, Newmarket, Richmond Hill, Aurora, East Gwillimbury, Georgina, and King.

In the first half of 2008, the overall crime rate for the York Region was up 1.5 from the same time frame in 2008. “Crimes Against Persons” increased by 2%, but “Crimes Against Property” (i.e. burglaries, home intrusion) only increased 0.1%. The York Police point to an increase in Vaughan-based homeowners installing home security devices, such as burglar alarms and motion detectors, and stronger enforcement policies for these numbers “holding steady.”

In the first 6 months of 2008, York Regional Police were notified of 1,351 robberies and attempted robberies, up 9% from the previous year. In Vaughan and surrounding towns, there were 1,354 break-ins and burglaries, slightly increasing by 18 cases from the year prior. While theft over $5,000 was down to 835 cases, theft under $5,000 (primarily electronics from residences) was up by more than 250 cases to a total of 4,713 for the first half of 2008.

Police remind homeowners that a burglar’s worst enemy is time, noise and light. Thieves seek the easiest opportunity or point of entry to gain access to a home. They encourage burglary alarm systems along with common sense physical security reinforcements such as deadbolt locks, adequate lighting, and window alarms on basement windows and exterior doors.
